Only two sections of the large house, with a swimming pool remain habitable: the old outbuilding where the help used to live; now the couple\u2019s living quarters, and the \u201capartment\u201d, in a separate part of the house. Needing money to survive, the couple decides to rent the remaining habitable part of the villa to \u201cAlex\u201d, a high-level foreign relief worker. He brings with him in the house, Andr\u00e9mise, an ambitious 17 years old Haitian girl of modest background.
