Haïti, début des années 60. Sarah a 8 ans. Dans une ville fantôme, elle vit menacée par Janvier, chef des Tontons Macoutes qui rôde pour frapper de façon arbitraire. Calfeutrée dans le grenier familial, elle s’invente des jeux et des rituels de son âge. Mais elle est témoin d’une scène d’une violence inouïe qui va forcer ses parents à fuir le pays. Elle sera confiée à son aimante grand-mère, Camille Desroullière. Les souvenirs de Sarah, aujourd’hui adulte, peinent à refaire surface. « Ce n’est qu’un mauvais rêve, ma chérie, juste un mauvais rêve », lui répétait sa grand-mère …

Haiti, early 1960s. Sarah is eight. In a ghost town, she lives threatened by Janvier, head of the “Tontons Macoutes”, lurking to strike at random. Hunkered down in the family attic, she invents games and rituals of her age. But she witnesses an incredibly violent scene, which would force her parents to flee the country leaving her and her sisters to her loving grandmother, Camille Desroullière. Now an adult, Sarah is troubled by her memories. “It’s just a bad dream, my darling, just a bad dream”, her grandmother use to tell.
